Recombobulation
I’m bundled up in a cozy, end-of-year, recalibratory mental state, so I’m going to keep this email relatively brief (and aim for a more thoughtful, putting-the-ribbon-on-2022 essay next week).
For now, though:
I’m finally getting around to starting up my You Probably Don’t Need publication, which’ll be sort of a recommendations email, sort of a place for consumption-skeptical, minimalist essays and other such works, and you can subscribe to that (free) here, if you care to.
I won’t be publishing One Sentence News next week (neither email nor podcast versions), though I am planning to publish all my other projects on their usual days (OSN necessitates a lot of daily news-centered attention, and I try to step away from that current events-sponge stance periodically, for my own sanity).
I’m working on a few other projects in the background, which will likely launch early next year. One is a sort of general “notes” publication, which’ll orient around all the various things I learn and write and think about, and the other is a supplementary news publication for Let’s Know Things and One Sentence News, meant to serve as a place to followup on LKT episodes, while also allowing me to share news items in more formats (and different cadences) than my existing setup allows (I’ll share more about these projects soon).
I’m experimenting with new social networks, now that Twitter has gotten bit a weird/unstable, so in addition to my Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube presences, I’m also on Mastodon, Tumblr, and Post, if you’d like to connect on any of those.
It’s been a rough year, monetarily, especially for folks working in news-related spaces. And while I’m still fortunate to be in the position I am, this has led to a big financial hit for me. I’m always experimenting and working to keep the legs on the money-stool balanced, and that’ll hopefully continue to bear fruit this coming year, but in the meantime: thank you thank you thank you to everyone who’s supporting my work by via subscriptions, memberships, buying me a coffee, buying one of my books, sharing my work, leaving reviews, sending me lovely emails in which you share something of yourself, and just generally being wonderful human beings I have the privilege to engage with. That means a lot, and your support—whatever shape it takes—fuels all the things I do (both work and non-work). I appreciate you :)
Speaking of which, if you’ve never written me before (or have done so but would like to reconnect), I’d love to hear from you! Your emails help me understand who’s on the other end of these newsletters (and my other work), but it’s also just a joy to hear about other peoples’ lives, experiences, efforts, and goals. I respond to every email I receive, and you can reach me by replying to this newsletter directly, sending a new email to colin@exilelifestyle.com, or if you’re keen to say something publicly (or want to connect with other readers of this missive), feel free to say howdy in the comments.
With that, here are some interesting and useful links to keep you company till next week:
These are retro-gorgeous.
The Science Events to Watch for in 2023
“Moon landings, mRNA vaccines, and climate finance are among the developments set to shape research in the coming year.”
2022 Weather Photographer of the Year Winners
“A photo of monstrous waves battering a lighthouse has won the Royal Meteorological Society’s Weather Photographer of the Year Competition 2022.”
The Weirdest Roadside Attractions in Every State
I love a good roadtrip, so this list is very much my jam (some really solid picks, too).
“The Parkulator calculates the area of the selected region being used for parking, and tells you how many houses could have been built in the space instead.” (This works anywhere in the world.)
Happy holidays, folks!
